Play players in their best position : Wed Mar 18, 2009 11:17 am
Should we not play our players in their best position and only fill gaps when absolutely necessary?

For example, Chris Hicks was brought in as a winger. As soon as he moved to full back last season, his tries dried up. Therefore his effectiveness has gone

True but would we not have been even weaker with another less experienced player at FB? Hicks had some experience there.

Hicks was brought in as a winger, but with the versatility to play anywhere in the backs.
With the limits on squad size there's very few players who are brought in with a view to them playing in only one position, albeit ideally you'd want them to play in their best position.

With Reardon injured (and arguably if he wasn't) Hicks is our best full back.

It's the blend in the team that's important hence at the moment Hicks at full back and Riley / Johnson on the wing is stronger than Hicks not at full back imo.

Hicks' tries dried up because he was no longer playing outside Gleeson. Anybody playing outside him could get 20 tries a season. We should keep him on the wing though as he just doesn't seem to perform at full back.

Put all the shirt numbers in a hat and let the players draw them out. Might get a better result than Saturday.

He didn't do to bad in a side that was stuffed!

Like sullivan before him he will always be a better no9 than he will ever be at half back.

Tony Smith has done that before, when he coached Huddersfield, hence Jarrod O'Doherty wore no.7 and Matthew Whitaker wore no.5 all season despite both being second rowers. Bit like William Gallas irritatingly wears no.10 at Arsenal.
