On the subject of
'spelling' props, I think Stuart Dickens did the full 80, on Thursday! Incredible effort, that, or did we just not tire him enough?
But that's the point Alan , if you have ' impact props ' you have to use them to give your other forwards a rest , they dont necessarily have to leave the pitch to get this rest
But if you bring a changeover player on and still give the ball to a forward that started the game then it is a waste of time bringing that player on
As regards defensive duties , that is beyond the control of any player , the attacking team decides who tackles who , they generally look to tire certain players by spotting them [ Mr Abrams main game plan I seem to remember ]
So I would think it unlikely that most teams ' spot ' a spelling prop
Also you look to ' match ' up attackers and defenders , ie Rob Burrows will tend to run at the bigger slower players and you want your bigger forwards to target the opposition H/B s , hooker
We scored a try on thursday when Hilly was left out of the scrum and ran out wide , Saints did something similar I think with graham on friday
What I do know is it is very difficult to ' switch on and off ' playing to certain styles of RL , ' catch up RL ' is the term when you have to start playing off the cuff to score a certain number of points in a given time span
Quite often players end up making themselves look stupid because of how much they are trying to push the game , this then transmits to the fans who get frustrated by mistakes made by players pushing things too far
