Interestng fact , Premier League club Burnley originally started off as a Rugby club and changed codes just before the formation of the Northern Union http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnley_F. ... .931912.29 I wonder if Leigh ever played them ?......... and has Fred got the dvd and original slate programme May take some time but that maybe the way to go

Stockport Rugby played at Edgeley Park, couldn't make the meeting at the George, but joined the Northern Union by telegram the next day. They played there until c.1906, when the club sold the ground to the soccer team.

When my dad was involved in reforming Stockport ARLFC in c. 1980 the daughter of one of the original players, aged well over 90, came to watch.

When you look at that it is quite amazing

42 matches played through winter on pitches without u soil heating and many of todays technologies

21 away matches all traveled most likely by train and then horse drawn coach , I wonder how long it took the Hull and Runcorn players to make the trip to each other

Though there again, I'd imagine that most, if not all, clubs had decent rail links in those days.

Yes Matt we did have a train station back then

But they were all steam powered

And the coaches were ' hay ' powered
