I think Matty Smith seems to be ok with kicks up to about 25 yards to the left of the posts. Yesterday confirmed that he hasn't got a big enough boot to reach the posts from the corner on either side of the sticks.
Charnley is certainly strong enough to kick goals from the corner - as he has done on several occasions in recent seasons. The problem is his inconsistency and he has missed some from close to the sticks.
In the good old days of 1985, David Stephenson used to kick the conversions to the left of the posts ( being right-footed), whereas left-footed Henderson Gill kicked them from the right of the sticks. It was goal kicks that were decisive in the 85 CC Final when both teams scored 5 tries, but Wigan got 4 conversions (several from the corner), whereas Hull only got 2.
What do people think of 2 players sharing the kicking duties? Smith the ones relatively close to the posts, Charnley those from the corners? Either that or give Charnley a go as the full-time kicker. Unfortunately, it seems to be a waste of time letting Smith even attempt them from the corner as he simply can't reach - unless it is a narrow pitch.
