but Sam doesnt play in the halves, he links in playing off the back of a solid structure and line runs that create the space for him to run "off the cuff". With an off the cuff halfback I feel even Sam would be less effective because our attack is all about creating that space, the movement of so many players and the impeccable timing of it all is what is ripping teams apart. I cant see Chase fitting this into sort of structure. Its just not his game.

It was pretty clear during the 4 nations last year that the Chase and Sinfield h/b partnership didn't compliment Sam at fb at all. I fear that Chase's off the cuff style would mean he would try and run or change direction instead of passing it out the back to Sam. It could work well, giving us an added unpredictable side to our attack, or it could mean that we bomb a lot of attacking opportunities. Would rather see Soward here tbh but I'm sure if Chase came here with the right attitude (ie willingness to learn and play for the team rather than just himself) then Wane and Harris could get him to fit in to our attacking structures and he'd be a real asset to us. Not sure about paying £300 grand plus for him though.

Chase actually reminds me a lot of Leuluai in his London days and I wouldn't be too unhappy to see him here given the improvement of TL over the years.

"Games as big as a grand finals define individuals and clubs. Remember we are only renting these shirts, I had my time in Pat Richards shirt. Ellery and Faz had there time in Sean's, Hampo and Radders in Sam's. You have to make a mark in these shirts that's still there the day you hand it over to someone else. So be aware for 80 minutes you are not only playing but also writing history and creating a legacy. How many people get to actually write history, not many. A big stage demands big players, be inspired. You play for Wigan, now go do it. Good luck." - Martin Offiah, 2010.

Wane and Harris will have to get him attacking the line if this is the case as Finch and Tommy this season have done it so effectively

Chase fitted in with the Exiles game plan last year. He and Tommy ran the show.
I do think that playing alongside better quality players Chase could improve his game massively. He will also have the benefit of being trained by Wane, Harris and Deacs, the latter two former quality Intl half backs.

Cas also have Shenton at their place next year. Rumours are that Saints may be paying part of his salary in the first year but after that it will all be down to Cas. Could Cas afford to pay both Chase and Shenton top money from 2014? Who knows but maybe a transfer fee for Chase and his salary off the books may help them towards financing their new stadium. Chase out plus a fee then Shenton in could be what the Cas accountants are looking at.

I actually think Chase is a better player then Tommy was at London but them so he should be at a more advanced age.

I don't buy in to theory that Chase would crash and burn at Wigan because he wouldn't be able to play within structures or be enough of a team man. I think he showed for the Exiles last year and even at points for England that he can play a more traditional type of halfback role then he has to at Cas and if he comes here (which I doubt btw) he'll fit in just fine.

Let's face it this is superleague and a halfback pairing of Chase and Smith wouldn't be bettered by many (if any) and will be more then enough to keep us in the trophy hunt whilst playing behind this pack and alongside Sam Tomkins.

If you don't bother to go to the game when you live in the locality then you are not really a fan and therefore your views are invalid. It's simple.

Re: Rumours and signings v8 : Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:11 pm
The irony is - we're discussing this as if we've got a range of choices.

There is hardly anybody available, either here or in Aus, who is an ideal fit for the halfback gap that will need filling at Wigan next season. But as others have said, that doesn't mean you can't make good use of what you can get.

I don't regard Rangi Chase as English (or as a worthy Man of Steel for that matter), but I do respect him as a dangerous attacker. He is that rare breed of player whom the opposition are frightened of, especially close to the line.

Imagine the effect of that on one side of the field, and Sam on the other.

Tommy L only actually started playing to our systems when Michael Maguire arrived in 2010, and he has stuck to them under Shaun Wane. I see no reason why the same couldn't happen with Chase.
