Seems to me that Phil Gould rates a player then that automatically promotes him to world class status.
According to some you'd listen to in this country every player in the NRL is world class and therefore automatically better then any English player!
Guys like Ellis, Graham, Burgess and Morley have proved this not to be the case and we have plenty of others that could do the same. The Aussies do indeed have more world class players and therefore more depthbut it's laughable some of the smoke English fans blow up their backsides.
Luke Burgess is a prime example that 'average' players get games in the NRL and I could name 30 English players off the top of my head better then him.

If you watch this guy play you'd realise he's world class the same standard as Sam Burgess, Ellis, Hock, Morley (in his prime) ect. I know Glenn Steward wouldn't come to super league but if he did I'd love him to play for us.

I know he's a class act but the point i'm making is sometimes we go a little overboard with certain players just because they play in the NRL.
Some English fan's think that every player in the NRL is world class when in fact that's not the case at all. There are a lot more world class players in the NRL then in superleague but there's also more then a fair share of average players as well.

I agree with this completely. There's a thread on the VT comparing Slater with Tomkins and some of the comments are just laughable, saying every fullback in the NRL is better than him. It's why Ellery's comments have p!ssed me off a bit, because as much as he's right in saying the overall standard is higher in Oz, he hasn't even tried to mention that there are plenty of very good players over here.
Nothing wrong with players having few beers providing its 48 hours before a game and they ain't getting off their heads.
Christ, they only human and are entitled to few beers.
Every time I hear this, I cringe. It's populist nonsense.
Of course they are entitled to a few drinks. If they are old enough, nobody can legally stop them.
But if they want to be the best athletes they can be, they'd be advised to stay off the hard stuff until the close season - just like Hanley, Edwards, etc.
Being a professional sportsman is a short career. For most it ends around 30 years old. Then you've got the rest of your life to get driunk. Is a bit of self-discipline for 10 years too much to ask for a lad who is earning very good money for doing what he loves 80 minutes a week?
I don't have a problem with players having a few sensible drinks after a game (as long as they have performed well). Thinking back to the dark days of 2005 & 2006 when players were seen lashed up laughing and joking on King Street after a mauling by poorer opposition. IIRC i'm sure someone posted on here that they said something to Dennis Moran on the evening after a particularly bad game and seen was knobbing around leathered in Walkabout...his comeback was "I'm only here for the f***ing money anyway".
