I agree but to let him go for nothing in one year (dependant on form) is not a good option. It's a bit like playing blind brag.
I'm guessing Wigan couldn't find a suitable replacement and/or Hull wouldn't/couldn't match the fee Wigan would require.

I suspect the latter is the major factor, and if they're trying to play hardball to force down the price I hope IL tells them to shove it. Obviously I don't know what Wigan want or what Hull are offering, but even with only a year on his contract a 24 year old in the England ETS has to command a decent transfer fee.

Finding a suitable replacement would also be a problem, because other than someone like Hill, Walmsley or George Burgess, who are all completely unrealistic, who else is around of a similar age and quality? Larne Patrick is the only one I can think of, but even he would take a bit of work in pre season to bulk up to play prop exclusively after being used quite often in the backrow by Hudds. Mossop could come back at some point but injuries seem to have got the better of him now.

I Think and hope he will stay long term.
Next year Hull will probably miss out on the top eight split and end up playing second tier clubs at the back end of the season with no chance of ever getting a go at further Grand Finals or the enhanced World Club Challenge.
His choice is stay at the top with Wigan or drift into obscurity with Hull.
For his and his family's future he needs to stay at Wigan.

Or he'll wait till next year, realise Hull are still no hopers and sign for Leeds and live inbetween there and Hull to keep is other half happy!!

I'd rather let him go for £0 next year than £100k this year.

Then we can spend the whole of next year trying to unsettle Sam Burgess and sign him for 2016.

I'm pretty sure you have tongue firmly in cheek, but if Sam Burgess' move to RU doesn't work out he'll have pretty much every NRL club queuing up for him.

Which is partly why top players can afford to take that risk....the safety net of League clubs welcoming them back if things don't work out will remain.
