Watched the great man on Sky tv duty yesterday and thought what a loss to the game he is.
After watching our latest performance where nil was our points total we surely must approach Ellery to bring him to Belle Vue.
Watching Chris Chester I have no confidence that he alone can dig us out of this mess. We have gone backwards since John Kear left.
Chris Chester benefitted from JK's input and right now we need someone like Ellery Hanley to help him out.
With EH to help him there will be no room for players with egos bigger than their ability and in Hanley you have the perfect master of self belief and dedication that others can only aspire to.
Get him approached now as if is painful to watch the agony on Chester's face.
There'd be no room for big egos because his would be the biggest in the room.
Didn't Cas do something similar with him a few years ago, some audiences with the great man, and I seem to remember it fizzled into nothing?
A superb player, one of the hold-your-breath players. There have been a few that make you hold your breath whenever or wherever they get the ball, because something magical might happen. Offiah, Jason Robinson, even Sam Tomkins in his early years, and Ellery was very much like that. But an audience with his ego, at great expense? Unlikely to achieve much.
As for winning the league with St Helens, isn't this the guy who coached them for one season and won it with an inherited team, at a time when there were only a couple of really good teams in the league, and then tried to claim the credit for the success of the next coach for inheriting "his" side?
