Captain : Wed Sep 09, 2020 4:35 pm
Pitts has been made captain in Miller's absence which has gone down well on many platforms.

To open a hot topic which has been discussed before. If he plays and people want Kelepi at SR, where does that leave Ashurst? Pitts is a decent player as is Ashurst as is Kelepi. It's not easy putting 3 Into 2 and everyone has their own thoughts.

Generally SR play 80 minutes and Ashurst and Pitts can both do that. Kelepi too. Batchelor also can play 80 although injuries haven't helped him. On form he's a very good player as his Knights selection shows. Out of the four only Kelepi could realistically play prop and that's probably why that decision has been made. Kelepi is a handful wherever he plays but IMO does need better hands for SR.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.....

I would just put him where ever the opposition scrum half is and get him running over the top of them.

Which many platforms has it gone down well on?

I like Pitts, he’s a well travelled and experienced player who could make a good captain but his place in the team hasn’t been assured so far. That said, many team captains get substituted or spelled during a game, some don’t start games, so it doesn’t present a problem re Tanginoa or Bachelor playing off the bench or even starting.
Personally, I’d have given the job to Ashurst who, injury permitting, a much more permanent fixture in the team, has been at the club for longer and is well respected by players and fans alike.

Second Rowers don’t necessarily play the full 80 minutes, there’s loads of examples of teams naming a third Back Rower on the bench. Murdoch-Massilla has often started from the bench for the teams he’s played for and he’s not too dissimilar to Tanginoa.

Any player can play prop!
Just because Tanginoa is more physical it doesn’t mean he’s suited for the prop forward role and will do well in the position. Playing him there also negates much of his impact as a player. He’s a wide running, tackle busting, line breaker perhaps the only one we’ve got! Sticking him in the front row so he can cart the ball up through the middle channel is a waste of his abilities.

I'm happy with Pitts as captain. I'd keep him as captain too.
He was well regarded as London captain and we need him.

As far as his position he's no. 1 second row for me. Stepped above Ashurst recently as I'm not sure Ashurst is back to his best yet. But still clearly good.
Kelepi off the bench.

It's gone down well on the Trinity Facebook page with many compliments.
Do you think Ashurst is vocal enough to be Captain? or I wonder if he would even want it.
I would say the majority of second rowers play 80 minutes. BMM is different and does do it in stints. It's difficult with interchanges to use props, hookers and SR into the limited amount teams have. An 80 minute prop wouldn't go a miss though!!

Sorry, I missed the bit that said Pitts would only be Captain for the one game!

Re: Captain : Thu Sep 10, 2020 2:32 pm
Pitt’s as captain is fine by me as he’s a natural leader. What if we get beat tonight though, will the blame lay on his shoulders like everyone seems to blame Miller?

On Tanginoa...

I’ve no issue with him playing prop...I’d initially had him down as a second rower and for the most part he played really well last season.

Has his dip in form this season been because of playing prop though, I’m not sure it is? His problem seems to be handling which would be the same wherever he played and his poor discipline at times, again could be the same wherever he plays.

If he can sort those two issues out though he could make a very good prop.

Thought it was interesting listening to CC make that point regarding the new rulings and how a lot of teams now are using the more mobile props, ex back towers as opposed to the big men. I’m not saying a few big lads aren’t an advantage because if we’ve got a big Dave playing at his best there’s not many better in the league but as an example I’d highlight Mike Cooper as a perfect example.

Against Hull last week he was absolutely immense...34 tackles, no misses...27 carries for 176 metres...3 offloads...6 tackle busts...no penalties...no errors...and that for me is everything you need from a modern day prop...Kelepi is similar in stature to Cooper...he works hard...can bust tackles...wins plenty enough collisions to be able to get an offload away...could be a huge asset in that position IMO...

that was his best game for us - maybe leadership agrees with him?
